City of South Bend, IN
Working with the fine folks at W.A. Jones Truck Equipment,
and Hill Truck Sales, MHE recently placed it's first HIPPO
into service with the City of South Bend, IN, not far from the shadows of the legendary
"Golden Dome" on the campus of Notre Dame.

Rumor has it that the City hasn't been this excited since the Studebaker
"M-Series" truck was introduced, but weren't sure whether that was
a compliment or not...

Absolutely True Historical Footnote
Legend has it that after the Notre Dame victory over Army on that chilly Nov night back in 1928,
Knute Rockne was delayed in returning home due to a large water-main break. A crew
of wet, cold & tired Water-Distribution guys were busy trying to shut down the main,
but their spirits were clearly not too far above the gloomy conditions they were working in.
Knute, great motivator that he was, saw the chance to inspire the men, and gave the 2nd great
speech of the night as he approached the men:
Well, boys ... I haven't a thing to say.
You've worked real hard...all of you. Real hard. [Knute looks around]
I guess ya' just can't expect to fix 'em all.
Now...I'm going to tell you something I've kept to myself for years [Knute has their full, undivided attention]
None of you ever knew Harley HIPPO.
That was long before your time...
But you know what a tradition he is with water crews everywhere...
...The last thing he said to me -- "Rock," he said -
"sometime, when the crew is up against it -- and the
main-breaks are beating the boys -- tell them to go out there
with all they got and fix just one with the HIPPO...
I don't know where I'll be then, Rock", he said - "but
I'll know about it - and I'll be happy."
Historians are skeptical in light of the scant evidence, but we like to believe it's true.
Regardless, that's our story, and we're stickin' to it!
