ASCE Assigns Grade of D to Nation's Infrastructure
http://www.asce.org/asce.cfm
Because decades of underfunding and inattention have endangered our
nation's infrastructure, $2.2 trillion in repairs and upgrades is
needed over the next five years to meet adequate conditions.
That's the conclusion of ASCE's new 2009 Report Card for America's
Infrastructure, released today, which assigns an overall grade of D
to the nation as well as individual grades in 15 infrastructure
categories. Since ASCE's last assessment in 2005, there has been
little change in the condition of America's roads, bridges,
drinking water systems, and other public works.
With the nation's infrastructure receiving renewed attention from
the White House, Congress, and the public as a vital part of an
economic stimulus package, the Report Card offers informed guidance
from professional engineers on where funds would best be spent.
Check out the report card by clicking on this link.
There's also some interesting reading at the ASCE blog, which you can access by clicking on this link.
Despite these depressingly low grades,
there is hope. Luckily, the civil engineers who design, build, and
maintain the nation’s infrastructure everyday are also best equipped
to make recommendations on how to improve it. In conjunction with the
grades, we have also released 5 Key Solutions to help raise the grades.
They are:
- Increase federal leadership in infrastructure to address the crisis.
- Promote sustainability and resilience in infrastructure to protect the natural environment and withstand natural and man-made hazards.
- Develop national, regional, and state infrastructure plans that complement a national vision and focus on system-wide results.
- Address life-cycle costs and ongoing maintenance to meet the needs of current and future users.
- Increase and improve infrastructure investment from all stakeholders.
The bolded part is our emphasis, because this is precisely the area
where HIPPO can benefit an organization: As a single-source, multi-power
system, HIPPO provides a fiscally and environmentally responsible,
integrated power solution which improves productivity & safety on
the job, while minimizing lifetime equipment (ownership) costs and
the worksite footprint. It allows you to manage more jobs with the
same staff and fewer pieces of equipment.
